Re: The Matrix’s portrayal of those who have escaped the grid as dark and miserable.
I disagree with Sam on this. In some way it IS accurate to portray it in this manner. Those outside the Matrix do live miserable lives in many ways, the world is in fact dark, miserable, and made so by both the masters of the system and unknowingly by those inside the system. To have escaped the Matrix is to be ostracized, ridiculed, maligned and treated with contempt or vitriol by the overwhelming majority still inside. This is your family at gatherings, passerbys on the street, coworkers, etc. All of the people you can’t talk to lest face some social consequences. Additionally now that the veil has been removed, you are forced to see just how bad the world really is constantly. It is a wicked place, it is poisoned (spiritually, environmentally, culturally, all of it), it is a harsh realm.
